The University of Johannesburg Library will launch its first “TED TALKS” lecture series on the 24th of March with Prof Ylva Rodny-Gumede as the host focusing on fake news. This gives way to another platform for students and lecturers to engage in critical thinking processes about crucial issues.
UJ’s Auckland Park Kingsway Campus (APK) library is the venue of this launch. The Gcina Mhlophe Amphitheatre, more specifically situated on the first floor of the library, will provide a milieu for the launch.
The lecture will focus mainly on “Fake News”, which has been echoed quite a number of times by the US President Donald Trump over the previous months. This has, amongst other factors, triggered the production of thoughts with regards to the nature of news. Prof Rodny-Gumede will lead the way to a talk about this ‘matter’.
When unpacking the abbreviation TED, the words Technology, Entertainment and Design emerge as the name of this non-profit media organisation. However, in the organisation’s own words.
“TED is a nonpartisan nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues – in more than 110 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.”
