Yesterday, 17 August, the University of Johannesburg Football Club continued their winning streak over Wits University as they managed to claim an away victory in round four of the Varsity Cup tournament.
The Johannesburg derby, is known as the match between UJ and Wits, was a match of high intensity in yesterday’s varsity cup fixtures. With Wits expected to maintain their momentum gained in the 2-0 threshing of CUT, UJ was expected to bounce back from a 2-0 TUT deficit encountered last week.
Yesterday’s derby saw history repeating itself as UJ’s good track record against neighbours and city rivals (Wits) was maintained through a 4-1 full-time score.
Rampant UJ was quick to make a difference in the score board, going to the half time break leading by three goals to nil. Manqoba Luvuno, Kenneth Langa and Pogiso Mabote had themselves mentioned in the score sheet respectively.
Wits opened the second half with some promising attacks which finally paid off. Following a free kick from the edge of the box, Wits got their only goal of the match in the form of Phuti Leboho’s header. Such effort was not enough to earn them a win, neither a draw.
The men in orange (UJ) eventually picked up their form but out of the chances they created in the second half, they only managed to reach the back of the net once. Phuti Leboho’s perfect run from the half way line helped him register his name to the list of goal scorers.
UJ is now fourth on the log with six points, four adrift leaders, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Meanwhile, Wits are sitting on number 7 with only three points after four games. TOJ
