The University of Johannesburg’s Division For Internationalisation Study Abroad Team has embarked on a programme named ‘Africa by Road’ “to provide UJ students with the opportunity to see Southern Africa”.
“Africa by Road is an initiative to move 600 UJ students into other African countries in the next three months,” according to the 2017 ‘Africa by Road’ statement from UJ’s Internationalisation Office.
“Our intention is to enable our undergraduate students to achieve a far richer appreciation and critical engagement with our peer nation-states in SADC,” said UJ’s VC letter to students and staff.
The programme’s activities will include academic practices, cultural exchange, community engagement and sporting in Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Botswana is also on the list of SADC countries that students can visit*.
The first group of students will leave for Mozambique and Botswana this weekend*. Each bus, travelling from border to border, will be carrying 57 students and three chaperons – amongst whom are student buddies.
Areas of visit in these countries
Botswana
- San Research Centre, University of Botswana (students will participate in community activities in the San community)
- Vumbura Plains on the Okavango Delta (students will conduct walks and sightsee)
- University of Botswana Sports Excursion (professional or recreational sporting activities: friendly matches and community engagements related to sports)
Mozambique
- Cultural and heritage tour of Maputo (students will be sightseeing)
- Inhaca Marine Biology Research Station (students will be sightseeing)
Swaziland
- Sporting activities: friendly matches and community engagements related to sports
Zambia
- Sporting activities: friendly matches and community engagements related to sports
- A visit to the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR), which is the host of Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) and the Zambia Legal Information Institute (Zambialli)
Namibia
- A visit to the University of Namibia Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre (SANUMARC)
Zimbabwe
- Sporting activities: friendly matches and community engagements related to sports
- Great Zimbabwe Ruins (students will sightseeing)

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the Botswana expedition would be cancelled but it was brought to our attention that the expedition is still going to happen.
