Certain KwaZulu-Natal universities will be shut down by its Student Representative Councils (SRCs) on Monday, states a recent report by the Mercury.

These include the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Durban University of Technology (DUT) and the University of Zululand (UniZulu).

UKZN Central SRC president Sanele Hlongwa confirmed to the publication that they will stage a protest in front of the institution until their demands are addressed.

The demands are for students to be cleared for registration, placed in appropriate residences and fully allocated their NSFAS allowances.

The University, said UKZN spokesperson Indu Moodley in a response to the Mercury, is conscious of the scheduled shutdown and plans to talk to the student body.

If the shutdown occurs, it will be the second for the year 2019, considering that the University of South Africa (Unisa) was brought to a standstill by its SRC during the beginning of the registration period in early January. TOJ
