Artist Proof Studio (APS) launched its exhibition titled Artist-proof studio: A Journey in Co-creation at the FADA gallery, UJ APB campus, on Thursday night.
The exhibition is a celebration of the 28th anniversary of APS, which was founded in 1991 by Kim Berman and the late Nhlanhla Xaba.
“It’s a very, very special thing for me to see Artist Proof people here and Artist Proof work here at UJ,” said the UJ lecturer and co-founder of APS, Kim Berman.
The theme of the exhibition is collaboration and it features prints from over 50 different artists. This includes established artists such as Colbert Mashile and William Kentridge.
It also includes projects that were collaborations between APS and UJ.
“Unlike other forms of creative art… printmaking demands collaboration,” said guest speaker and board director of APS Lauren Wolfe.
She argued that while the physical aspect of printmaking is collaborative, the studio itself exhibits collaboration on many levels. “There is a spirit of creative democracy at work,” she added.
APS is also known for subsidising young artists and students. “APS is critically and importantly a space of creative learning and empowerment, in which students are taught the craft of printmaking and creative life skills.”
The exhibition will run until 22 July. TOJ
