Varsity Football 2019 commences and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) squad, also known as the ‘Orange Army’, embark on another conquest to claim intervarsity soccer dominion.

The Men’s Varsity Football kicks off for its seventh season; it has been a trophyless drought for the Orange Army since the tournament’s inception, making them an ‘almost there’ title contender.

Coached by Mandla Zwane, UJ loads a new squad to its arsenal led by the young captain Sphesihle Mbhele. Interesting lineup fixtures lies ahead with familiar foes and news entries in the tournament gunning for the same title.

UJ kickstarts their varsity football campaign far from home, with an away match against Central University of Technology (CUT) today at 6.30.

Round two and three present an interesting round of fixtures as UJ squares up with two championship rivals, Tswane University of Technology (TUT) and University of Pretoria (UP Tuks), who have added at least two Varsity football trophies to their tally.

Hopes of ending this trophyless run haunt UJ and anticipation looms for the eventualities of this title chase. An interesting football season beckons but support with caution because football will give you real death, take heed from the words Baroka FC coach Kgoloko Thobejane. TOJ
