With the Men’s Varsity Football underway and only three matches being played, here’s a quick look at the eight top teams.
1. Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Football
TUT is currently first on the log with nine points and remains undefeated. They first played against the University of Pretoria’s TUKS in a derby rival that unfolded with TUT wining 1-0 at the TUKS stadium.
They later crushed the University of Johannesburg’s Orange Army with a 2-0 win on the Army’s home ground, Soweto Stadium.
Keeping to their reputation as the reigning champions, they kept to their winning streak through a 2-1 win against the North West University.
TUT will be playing against the University of KwaZulu Natal in round four.
2. University of Johannesburg (UJ) Orange Army
The Orange Army is Second on the log with six points.
Having played away against the Central University of Technology, they started well with a 0-1 win against the hosts in the first round.
In the second-round meeting with champions TUT, UJ’s Army lost on home ground through a 2-1 score, feeling the champion’s might from the previous season where they lost 0-1 in the semifinal.
Redeeming themselves and earning the second-place position, UJ later face last season’s runner up University of Pretoria’s TUKS in Tshwane and won 4-0.
In round four, the Orange fellows will be playing against the University of the Western Cape.
3. University of Free State (UFS) Kovsie
Third on the log with five points, they opened the season using a 2-0 win, defeating the University of the Western Cape at Xerox Shimla Park.
UFS later drew against the North West University at Mahikeng in round two and then did the same again during its encounter with University of KwaZulu Natal in the third round.
For the fourth round, UFS will be playing against the Central University of Technology.
4. North West University (NWU) Football
Housing just four points, NWU is now fourth on the log. On their first game they had home ground advantage and the host won 2-1 against the University of KwaZulu Natal.
They went on to draw 1 all against UFS in Mahikeng. Meeting the University of KwaZulu Natal again at the Xerox Shimla Park, NWU drew 0-0.
NWU will be playing against University of Pretoria’s TUKS in the fourth round.
5. University of the Western Cape (UWC) Football
The team was off to a poor start, losing their first match 3-2 in round one to UFS’s Kovsies. They then lost 2-1 to the University of Pretoria’s TUKS on the second round.
In the third round, UWC redeemed themselves by winning 2-0 against Central University of Technology, placing themselves at the number five spot with only three points.
In the fourth round, UWC will be playing against the UJ’s Orange Army, who are currently on fire after defeating 4-0 the University of Pretoria’s TUKS in the third round.
6. Central University of Technology (CUT) Football
CUT lost its opening match against UJ and made a comeback by winning 3-1 against the University of KwaZulu Natal in the second round.
The team then lost 2-0 to UWC Football. CUT is currently number six on the log table with only 3 points to their name.
They will be playing against UFS’s Kovsies in the fourth round.
7. University of Pretoria (UP) TUKS Football
TUKS has lost in the semifinals last season and this season’s opening match to TUT with a score of 1-0.
UP won 2-1 in round two against UWC, but events did not go well for UP TUKS side as they were defeated 4-0 by UJ, the biggest score UJ has seen since the start of the 2019 season in all the three rounds it played.
Their round four game will be against NWU Football.
8. University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) Football
UKZN is one of the poorly performing team with only one point in three games played. They have landed on number eight and at the bottom of the log table with a tendency of conceding goals in last minutes.
In the first round UKZN lost 2-1 to NWU. They lost again in the second round and this time to CUT football on a 3-1 score and played a draw against UFS Kovsies in the third round. TOJ
