Voting for the University of Johannesburg’s Convocation Executive Committee will end on Friday, 30th August 2019, according to an email sent to UJ Convocation members.
The University’s Convocation is a body of alumni (including those of its legacy institutions: Technikon Witwatersrand and Rand Afrikaans University and Vista University), management and employees.
Alumni members entail diplomates and graduates of accredited subsidised qualifications.
Nominations were received before the election process began on Tues, 13th August 2019, via a secured online voting system, which requires for a voting number and a password sent to individual members.
The voting process needs to adhere to the University’s Election Policy and the principles of good governance. Results will be published during the first week of September.
The Convocation serves as “a structure for deliberation by these role players in accordance with the University vision, mission and values,” reads the UJ’s Convocation Constitution, which was last amended and approved by the Council on Friday, 23rd November 2018.
Furthermore, it is a body tasked to represent its constituencies in line with the mandates set by them, which are carried out within the frameworks of educational legislation and the institution’s regulations.
Convocation Executive Committee
UJ’s Convocation Executive Committee consists of five members, whom are elected by the Convocation and work on a voluntary basis with no remuneration from the University.
“Elected members of the Executive Committee have no executive powers within the University,” says the Constitution. This form of power is exercised by UJ’s Council members.
One can be elected in the Executive Committee on the basis of being a convocation member for no less than five year, and meeting appointment criteria in positions of trust such as directorship according to the laws of company governance.
Composition of Convocation Executive Committee
The posts are occupied in relation with votes, applying that the person with the highest votes will become President and the second highest will fill the Deputy President post.
It further consists of three additional members elected by the Convocation, Vice-Chancellor and Principal or representatives, registrar or the representatives who will act as secretary and lastly, an alumni relations officer.
It is provisioned in UJ’s Statute that the Council houses two Convocation representatives, who are not students or employees of UJ, they become part of the Council as mandated by the University’s Statue.
These members are termed as “external” and can occupy both a position in the Council and Convocation Committee.
They serve the same term in both the Committee and the Council. Those who do not serve in the Council hold office for no more than three years. TOJ
