UNSW Sydney’s Bengaluru campus is set to bring a globally ranked Australian university directly to India’s technology hub, as the country’s foreign-university campus ecosystem expands under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The new UNSW Bengaluru campus at Embassy Manyata Business Park is opening in August 2026. UNSW, ranked 19th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027, becomes the highest-ranked university among the foreign institutions establishing campuses in India.
The campus is part of a broader push to allow leading foreign higher education institutions to establish physical campuses in India and offer internationally recognised degrees to students without requiring them to relocate overseas.
UNSW Bengaluru Campus: Courses and Location
UNSW Bengaluru is located inside Embassy Manyata Business Park in North Bengaluru, a major technology and business district that houses multinational companies and technology firms.
The university has received approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to operate its Bengaluru campus.
For its initial intake, UNSW plans to offer undergraduate programmes in:
- Business
- Computer Science
- Data Science
The campus will also offer a postgraduate programme in Cyber Security. UNSW has said that additional programmes are expected to be introduced in subsequent academic years.
The location is intended to provide students with opportunities for industry engagement alongside their academic programmes.
UNSW Bengaluru Ranked #19 Globally
One of the major attractions of the new campus is the ranking of its parent university.
UNSW Sydney is ranked 19th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and is described by the university as Australia’s #1 university for employment outcomes in the same rankings.
This places UNSW among the world’s top 20 universities according to the QS 2027 ranking.
Students studying at UNSW Bengaluru will therefore have access to a degree from a university with a globally recognised academic brand while studying in India.
Foreign Universities Expanding Across India
UNSW Bengaluru is part of a much wider transformation in India’s higher education landscape.
In June 2026, the Ministry of Education issued Letters of Approval to the University of Bristol, University of York and UNSW Sydney to establish campuses in India. Bristol and York are establishing campuses in Mumbai, while UNSW is establishing its campus in Bengaluru.
These approvals followed earlier approvals for the University of Southampton and University of Liverpool, taking the number of institutions with Letters of Approval under the UGC’s foreign-university campus framework to five at that point.
The broader pipeline is considerably larger. Government and media reports have identified additional foreign universities at different stages of approval and establishment, while a July 2026 research report identified 13 international university campuses admitting students for the 2026-27 academic year.
University of York Mumbai Campus to Start in September
The University of York Mumbai is another major foreign-university campus preparing to begin operations.
The university has received its Letter of Approval from the UGC, clearing the way for students to begin their studies in September 2026.
The campus is located in Mumbai’s Powai Business District, an area with a concentration of technology companies, businesses and startups.
The University of York has announced programmes linked to areas including Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Business, Economics, Finance and Creative Industries as part of its Mumbai offering. The Ministry of Education also confirmed the proposed programme areas when announcing the campus approval.
University of Bristol Also Establishing Mumbai Campus
The University of Bristol is establishing its Mumbai Enterprise Campus as part of the same expansion of foreign higher education institutions in India.
The campus has received UGC approval and is designed around programmes including Data Science, Economics, Finance, Business Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, among other areas.
Bristol’s official Mumbai campus website describes the institution as UGC approved and states that applications are open for the September 2026 cohort.
Why Foreign University Campuses Matter for Indian Students
The expansion creates a new option for Indian students who want an international university education without necessarily moving abroad for their entire degree.
Studying at an India-based foreign university campus can reduce some of the costs and logistical requirements associated with overseas education, including international relocation and living expenses.
However, students should not assume that every foreign university campus in India will offer the same costs, admissions process, facilities, employment opportunities or international mobility arrangements.
Each institution has its own programme structure, fees, eligibility requirements and campus facilities. Students should therefore compare these factors carefully before accepting an offer.

The arrival of UNSW, York and Bristol adds to the foreign institutions already operating or preparing to operate campuses in India.
