A considerable number of students are thunderstruck after their Financial Statements revealed that their debts have been cleared off.
Following the FeesMustFall Movement at UJ’s sister University, Wits, the University of Johannesburg called for a meeting with the Student Representative Council during recess, but the request was declined by the SRC.
Earlier today the SRC and SASCO have called for a mass meeting tomorrow which will take place at 12 o’clock mid-day. But this meeting will be launched once the SRC have met with political leaders of different political parties at 9 o’clock in the morning.
Following the promulgation of a message which calls for a mass meeting tomorrow, the University of Johannesburg has then cleared off current and previous debts of students.
“We note the tricks of the University of Johannesburg of trying to confuse you regarding your financial standings with the University. As the leadership we are still calling on the University to deal away with student debt,” a statement from UJ- SRC reads.
“In fact students have a right to know their financial information. We demand the financial button on the student portal to be taken back with immediate effect,” the statement continues.
It is still not clear whether the University of Johannesburg has purposefully removed the financial information button or it is just a technical glitch.
The University of Johannesburg was not available for comments regarding the financial information button and the clearance of students’ debts. TOJ
