Packing a suitcase can be daunting, especially if you are a frequent traveler. A common problem is your clothes coming out wrinkled when you unpack them. But there is a way you can pack all you need without wrinkling anything.

Packing using the rolling method alongside the flat packing method can ensure wrinkle free clothes, underwear and shoes, all in one medium sized travelling bag.

Here is how you can be a pro packer.

Step One: Stuff your underwear and socks inside your shoes. This not only saves space for other items, but it also helps retain the shape of your shoes. Once that is done, pack your shoes in order, sneakers or heels first. Flip flops and pumps are slim and may be fitted in between the other shoes.

Step Two: Next step would be to roll your jeans and any other heavy clothes. Once you have rolled all of them, it is time to align them next to the shoes.

Step Three: The third step involves rolling up your t-shirts or any light weight clothes. But don’t roll up any shirts or dresses. Cardigans and loose shorts may be rolled. Once that is done, it is time to lay the lightweight clothing on top of the jeans and shoes. Try to fill every nook and cranny.

Step Four: The final step would be to fold your blazers, jerseys, shirts and dresses, then place them on top of all your rolled-up clothes. These items are flat packed because they are not wrinkle resistant like t-shirts and jeans. They are also packed at the top so that they will be removed first when the suitcase is unpacked.

What about the toiletries and small pieces jewellery?

You can use ziploc bags or the coin bags used to store chargers, earphones and inexpensive jewellery. If you don’t have access to these, the small plastic bags used by street vendors to package corn chips, ama kip kip, are a great alternative.

Place your toiletries such as lotion, perfume and toothbrush in a plastic bag if you do not have a vanity bag. After this, place all the small packages in the mesh section of your suitcase.

Bonus Tips

Do not place expensive items in your suitcase in case you lose your luggage. Rather wear expensive jewellery or place it in a small carry-on bag, which you will keep on you throughout the journey.

Only carry what you will need if you are going on a trip. Less is more because you might want to buy some souvenirs and you will need space.

Always wear clothing that consumes space en route (to and from your trip), clothing such as coats and boots. TOJ
