The UK’s Graduate visa route will be shortened from two years to 18 months for most graduates from January 1, 2027, under changes to the Immigration Rules.
The change will affect international students completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees who apply for the Graduate visa on or after January 1, 2027. PhD and other doctoral graduates will continue to receive three years of Graduate visa permission.
The change is particularly relevant for international students beginning UK postgraduate courses in 2026, many of whom will graduate after the new 18-month rule takes effect.
UK Graduate Visa: 2 Years Until December 2026
Under the current rules, eligible graduates who apply for the Graduate visa on or before December 31, 2026 can receive two years of permission.
Applications made on or after January 1, 2027 will receive 18 months for eligible bachelor’s and master’s-level qualifications.
The Immigration Rules explicitly establish the distinction according to the application date.
The Graduate visa is an unsponsored route, meaning graduates do not need an employer to sponsor them to obtain the visa. It allows eligible graduates to work or look for work in the UK.
PhD Graduates Continue to Get Three Years
The reduction does not apply to doctoral graduates.
Students who successfully complete a PhD or another doctoral qualification will continue to receive a three-year Graduate visa.
This distinction is explicitly retained in the Immigration Rules.
September 2026 Master’s Students Face the New 18-Month Period
For students starting a typical one-year master’s programme in September 2026, the timing is significant.
If they complete their course around September 2027, they would normally apply for the Graduate visa after completing the course. Because that application would take place after January 1, 2027, they would generally fall under the 18-month Graduate visa period rather than the previous two-year period.
The critical date is therefore not simply the date on which the student started university or completed the course. The relevant distinction in the Immigration Rules is the date on which the Graduate visa application is made, subject to all other eligibility requirements.
Students Must Complete Their Course Before Applying
Students cannot simply apply for the Graduate visa before December 31, 2026 to secure the two-year period if they have not yet completed their eligible course.
To apply, the student must have successfully completed the eligible course, and their education provider must have notified the Home Office of the successful completion. The applicant must also be in the UK when applying.
This makes the timing particularly important for students whose courses finish in 2027.
UK Student Visa Fee Rises to £558
The cost of applying for a UK Student visa also increased in April 2026.
From April 8, 2026, the Student visa application fee increased from £524 to £558 for applications made both inside and outside the UK.
The fee is separate from the Immigration Health Surcharge and other costs associated with studying in the UK.
Switching From Graduate Visa to Skilled Worker
The Graduate route is not a settlement route and cannot itself be extended.
Graduates who want to remain in the UK for longer can potentially switch to another immigration route, including the Skilled Worker visa, provided they meet the relevant requirements and secure eligible employment.
Under the current Skilled Worker rules, the standard salary requirement is generally at least £41,700 per year or the applicable going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher.
Eligible new entrants, including certain recent graduates, can qualify for a lower salary threshold of £33,400, but the relevant going-rate requirements must also be satisfied. The lower threshold therefore does not mean that every graduate can obtain Skilled Worker sponsorship with a £33,400 salary.
Indian Students Show Strong Interest in Skilled Worker Route
The UK’s own evaluation of the Graduate route found that 81% of Indian Graduate route users who intended to apply for another visa said they planned to apply for a Skilled Worker visa.
That was the highest proportion among the major nationalities examined in the evaluation. The figure relates to respondents who intended to apply for a further visa, rather than all Indian Graduate route holders.
The finding highlights why the shorter Graduate visa period could be particularly important for Indian students planning to build a career in the UK.
What the 18-Month Rule Means for International Students
The reduction from two years to 18 months gives graduates six fewer months to secure employment and transition to another eligible immigration route.
This does not mean graduates must obtain Skilled Worker sponsorship immediately after completing their degree. The Graduate route continues to provide permission to work or look for work during its validity period.
However, students who ultimately need employer sponsorship should treat the Graduate visa as a limited period for establishing themselves in the UK labour market rather than assuming that the two-year window will remain available.
What Students Starting in 2026 Should Consider
International students planning to begin UK bachelor’s or master’s programmes in 2026 should factor the new Graduate visa period into their financial and career planning.
Students should consider:
- Whether their chosen course has strong employment outcomes
- The occupations they could realistically enter after graduation
- Whether those occupations qualify for Skilled Worker sponsorship
- Typical salaries for their target occupation
- The applicable Skilled Worker salary and going-rate requirements
- The cost of studying and living in the UK
- The additional time and cost involved in securing another immigration route
Students should also avoid relying on the assumption that a UK degree automatically leads to a long-term right to remain in the country.
UK Graduate Visa Changes Take Effect From January 2027
The UK government’s decision to reduce the Graduate route from two years to 18 months represents another tightening of the country’s post-study immigration framework.
For bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying from January 1, 2027, the Graduate visa will provide 18 months of permission. Doctoral graduates will retain three years.
